4) Community

The D.C. Farm to School Network works with parents, teachers, school staff, organizational partners, and key stakeholders to assure that farm to school programs are a priority in our community.

Educational Events – We coordinate two educational events each year – D.C. Farm to School Week in the fall and Strawberries & Salad Greens in the spring.  These events and others are opportunities for interested parents, teachers, principals, school food services staff, volunteers or others to get involved with an exciting farm-to-table experience at a school.

Arcadia’s Mobile Market – The Mobile Market is a school bus turned farmers’ market on wheels.  It will visit schools and other community sites in Washington, DC and provide fresh, affordable produce for local parents and families.  Market stops will include nutrition education, chef demonstrations and recipe handouts.  For more information, contact Benjamin, Arcadia’s Mobile Market Director, at benjamin[at]arcadiafood[dot]org.

Coalitions – We are a part of a number of local and national partnerships working to improve the health and well-being of youth in the District of Columbia

Friends of DCPS Office of Food & Nutrition Services – This committee of parents and community members works with DCPS school meals team to give feedback on the school meal programs and help promote some of the exciting changes underway.

OSSE Health & Wellness Curriculum Advisory Board – As part of the Community Health Education Team (CHET), this is a group of organizations working together to define criteria for rating effective health & wellness curricula and developing a toolkit of effective sample criteria for D.C. teachers.

Parents for Better D.C. School Food – This is a group of parents who advocate for replacing highly processed, sugary foods with wholesome, nutritious food in District of Columbia public schools.  The Network collaborates to engage parents and assure that parents are a part of the school food reform process.

DC Food Policy Council – This is a burgeoning Food Policy Council that aims to bring together the various organizations working on food security, nutrition, health, and farming in Washington, DC to create a more just and equitable local food system.

National Farm to School Network – This organization works to nurture initiatives that support community-based food systems, strengthen family farms, and improve student health by reducing childhood obesity.  We are the District of Columbia “state lead” agency, and thus are the liaisons to NFSN’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Committee and to farm to school leaders from around the country.

School Food FOCUS – This is a national collaborative that leverages the knowledge and procurement power of large school districts to make school meals nationwide more healthful, regionally sourced, and sustainably produced.  We are the D.C. partner organization, working with School Food FOCUS and DCPS to make change in our public school meals.

Community Partners – In addition to working in collaboration with organizations and individuals in coalitions, we work with and support a number of community partners:

Local Organizations

National Organizations
